Death of Dave Bell, fellow musician and friend

We are very sad to report that our dear friend and bodhran player Scotsman Dave Bell passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, 2008 in Munich. Dave played bodhran, percussions, spoons and bones on the most recent Matching Ties CD "Across the Sea" and toured with us in our "Irish Quartet" with Colm O'Tuama from Dublin on tin whistles and Irish Flute, or played with Trevor and I as trio. Although Dave was fighting diabetes for some years, he always managed to be friendly and caring. We enjoyed his great sense of humor and adept conversation. Dave showed up spontaneously to play on many of our Munich gigs ,and was a key figure in the Monday night Irish folk sessions as well as in his duo "Hijinx" with Colm in Munich pubs. Our condolences to his girlfriend Bernadette. We loved him and will miss him sorely. So long Dave. Keep beating that bodhran in that big folk band in sky.

As his sister, Anne, and on behalf of his other sister Vivien and his brother John, I want to thank you all for sharing all the fun of the folk music you and he made together, and thank you for the kind words on this website. I remember you and your lively music well when I visited David in Munich a few years ago. Two years ago, came home on a visit to Scotland and talked fondly about you all.

Met David through his sister Anne a couple of times here in Scotland and there was never a dull moment, tunes a plenty and no drink left in the bottle!

We will so miss our Uncle David - His fellow musicians and friends down the pub in Germany - I have never met you all but have spent many an hour laughing at Uncle Davids tales! He valued those friendships. My best wishes to those who will miss him across the globe, especially to my little cousin Claire his beloved daughter. With love, his niece in Bonnie Scotland,Joanna x

My father (David's brother)told me the sad news Thursday morning. That very evening I found myself doing a whisky tasting at a private squash club of all places and, remembering that David was once so into the sport, I had a sip of whisky in one of the courts as I remembered him. I swear I could hear that great laugh he had!

He really did live life close to the edge!! What is that bumper sticker - 'Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "WOW! What a ride!' - That was my uncle David!!

He inspired me to follow me heart and follow a life of music and I am still playing!

I visited David in Munich with his sister, Anne, and the trip was enhanced by his presence and meeting many of his friends at the Irish Pub or at his home. The magic was continued when he stayed with Anne & I in Dec 2005 especially when we played a session, along with Jeremy and Nancy, at the Bruce Arms, Limekilns; it is still talked about.
My thoughts are with his family at this time, particularly Claire.
A sad loss.

I am so sorry for the loss of David. Claire, his daughter, is one of the strongest people I have ever met. I feel for his siblings, including my mother, and I cannot imagine the feeling of losing a brother. My thoughts just now are with Claire, this is beyond comprehension what she is going through. Claire I love you and miss you so much. I will see you soon.
